Theodore Roosevelt

Frank Lloyd Wright

These illustrations were created in 1971 while working at Maritz Motivation Company. The client was H.J. Heinz. They were used for the direct mail campaign that I spoke of in yesterdays blog. These illustrations were created using the traditional tools of felt tip markers, tracing paper and white paint. Here is the process: I found photo reference of Theodore Roosevelt and Frank Lloyd Wright in books, there was no internet, and I created a line contour drawing in pencil. I applied markers (Magic Marker) on a sheet of tracing paper to create the color background. I laid the tracing paper over the contour drawing and applied white paint to create the highlight areas of the face. Each portrait took about twenty minutes.
