Portrait of Erik Weihenmayer by John Dyess

This portrait was created for Prentice Hall Literature ,Penguin Edition and was one of  twelve portraits of authors. This is a brief description of Erik as written in a kit promoting  this Prentice Hall Literature  series. Erik Weihenmayer has not allowed blindness to keep him from para-gliding,biking,long distance running ,sking ,and mountain climbing. He made the cover of Time magazine in 2001 after he had reached the summit of Mount Everest. He has said “I truly believe that we will change what it means to be blind, and we’ll do it one mountain at a time.” In 2002 ,he climbed Mount Kosciuszko, therby completing his quest to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents.

    John,

Your portraits always nail the likeness so well, but this one seems to capture his spirit as well!

      Glenn,
In the beginning stages of this assignment the client wanted me to search the internet and find jpegs to work from. Since the authors were participating in this project I asked the client to contact the authors and get photos. They did and the project was successful. Sometimes you just have to ask.
