Barack Obama "HOPE" poster by Shepard Fairey

This post is used as a teaching assignment for my illustration students at Meramec Community Collage and will address the “Fair use doctrine” as applied to the Barack Obama “HOPE” poster created by artist Shepard FaireyThe image of Barack Obama created by Shepard Fairey is based on a photograph taken by photographer Mannie Garcia and the copyright for this photo was owned by Associated Press. AP sued Shepard Fairey to gain a share of the income from this poster. “Fair use doctrine” has been decided on a case by case basis and the outcome can vary. To me it is complicated.
