Almost time for Spring Training

Baseball art by John Dyess

This is another digital painting captured from my television screen and enhanced in photoshop. This image reminds me of the sports oil paintings by Bernie Fuchs. Early in his career, before viewers could record television shows, Bernie created illustrations of a Rose Bowl Game for Sports Illustrated while watching the game live and illustrations of the Orange Bowl game on television.. I think he probably photographed the screen and worked from slides he captured of the game.

Orange Bowl game by Bernie Fuchs

Here is a paragraph from Sports Illustrated ,September 5,1977.

-“In 1969 Gangel sent him to Pasadena where he watched the Rose Bowl game live and the Orange Bowl on a  television set and in 36 consecutive hours produced six paintings of both events for a fast-closing story. He still considers it his most exciting assignment.”

I think the image I posted is from the Orange bowl game. It is one of two printed tear sheets I found from this 1969 Sports Illustrated issue. JD

Nice imaging, both Dyess and Fuchs! Sounds like a good law firm as well.
