Sarajevo by John Foster Dyess

This painting Sarajevo was accepted in the Art Section Exhibition of the Saint Louis Artists’ Guild in August of 1996. The size is 19″ wide x 24″ high and is painted on cold press illustration board using graphite pencil for drawing the squares and liquid acrylic paint and gouache paint for color.
This is the last of my squared paintings for now, maybe I will show additional paintings using squares in the future.

As usual, a very strong graphic/visual image! The positioning of the butterfly over the stark image of the skull is haunting. The outer edges of the butterfly’s wings appear to be faces in opposition in the conflict but both wanting peace?

I do have one question, though. In the first examples of squared art the square motif appeared in the detail images as well as the background but in these later few the squares were not present in the foreground details?
