counter textures

green drink glass and dish soap bottle

My recent photographs that  I have taken are of every day common things ,found in my home . Most of these photos were taken sitting on our kitchen counter top in sunlight  that comes through a window. My  focus is on shapes and colors within the objects and not what these objects are.
This post reminds me of words said by Emily in the cemetery after she has died, in the play “Our Town”, about the importance and beauty found in the common everyday things experienced in our lives.
“Good- bye,Good-by, world. Good-by Grover’s Corners. Mama and Papa. Good-by to clocks
ticking, and Mama’s sunflowers. And food and coffee. And new-ironed dresses and hot baths and sleeping and waking up. Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you.”

a trip to another planet horizontal

A trip to another planet  by John Foster Dyess

This image began as a photograph of my basement floor, and was enhanced in Photoshop. The textures in this photograph reminded me of photographs taken of the surface of planets or moons around planets. As I get older I like to record things that may  seem mundane or overlooked by others. I think there is visual interest in common things and I like to record what I see in these common every day objects. Thanks for looking at images on my blog.

lots of love

hope your day is filled with lots of love

My wife Carolyn was recently teaching our  grandson Dominic  how to tell time  on a non digital clock and  as part of this project Dominic made  a clock out of a paper plate with cut black paper for hands . Our granddaughter Claire made the sign about about love.
I’m thankful that for now I’m healthy and my children and grandchildren are healthy. I hope everyone who sees this post is also healthy and filled with love.

Raylan 4 13 20

Raylan our cat 4 13 2020

Raylan has no concerns about the world outside of our house. He lives inside of our house and never goes outside. He eats and sleeps and lays on our laps, which is the way it should be for cats.

Walking-in-New-York-City

“Walking in New York City” by John Dyess 30″x 30″oil on canvas print

My wife Carolyn and I are having a joint show on Thursday March 31 at “The Gallery of Contemporary Art at St.Louis Community College -Wildwood. Below is the statement about our show.

Husband and wife artists, John and Carolyn Dyess share their home studio but do a variety of types of work and creative projects.
John is a traditional illustrator by career but does personal work in painting, photography, collage and digital media.
This show features his photography taken in New York City, digitally manipulated and abstracted, printed on large stretched canvas and then painted.

Carolyn is graphic designer, with a background in print design, but has been working in fiber and fabric over the last few years. Creating what she calls, “fabric arrangements or ‘fabrications’ ”. Some pieces are along the lines of small art quilts, some have dimensional, stuffed, trapunto- like areas, and some are stuffed and wired shapes arranged in a container or wall sconce.

Delanie a horse lover

This is my granddaughter Delanie posing in front of some of  her “Breyer” horses. My wife and I visited Delanie, my daughter Christy,my granddaughter Claire and son in law Mike this weekend. We enjoyed watching Claire swim  in a meet and watching Delanie acting in a production of 101 Dalmatians. She played Anita. I also enjoyed viewing some short movies Delanie created, using stop motion animation, called  Breyer Horse Stable and Bareback Jumping . Hope you enjoy these as much as my wife Carolyn and I enjoyed watching them. Delanie loves riding her horse Summer Moon.

Happy birthday mom. She would have been 96 yesterday.

scene from a movie

I had a medical procedure called Catheter Ablation Monday and decided while I’m recuperating I would play at the computer and create some new digital art. I started by recording a movie  yesterday than I took TV screen photos with my digital camera of scenes that interested me visually. I up-loaded a few of my photos from the movie and painted over the photos in photoshop. I don’t know if doing this is covered under the Fair Use Doctrine so I will not name the movie. Anyway I’m having fun with this technigue.
